TBF DONATING £100,000 FOR DENSITY RESEARCH

The donation to Prevent Breast Cancer this year will fund Prevent’s research into breast density, the second-highest risk factor for developing breast cancer, after age. Having a high level of breast density can lead to cancer going undetected on a mammogram and also increases individual risk of developing the disease. Although women who are affected are up to six times more likely to face a diagnosis of breast cancer, little is understood about why this is.

Prevent Breast Cancer trustee, Diana Harris, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40s, said: “Having gone through breast cancer myself, I joined the board of trustees at Prevent because I was drawn to its focus on finding ways to create a future free from breast cancer – I have two daughters, and I never want them to experience what I went through. Despite it being such a strong risk factor, there has been relatively little research into breast density. It can help predict which women are more at risk of developing breast cancer, so if Prevent can find new treatments that can stop cancers from forming, fewer women will have to go through what I faced.”

The funding from The Tim Bacon Foundation will be going towards two research projects, based at the University of Manchester. Both projects aim to help scientists better understand this risk factor to protect future generations from the disease. One project examines both high- and low-density breast tissue from women who are undergoing surgery, and the other investigates the specific changes to DNA that lead to cancer developing.

The two projects funded by The Tim Bacon Foundation will pave the way for further discoveries which could improve the screening process for breast cancer and lead to new avenues for prevention of the disease, such as the development of drugs to reduce breast density levels.

Prevent Breast Cancer do incredible
joint events over the course of the year, as well as collaborating on online content.

Jeremy Roberts, chair of the Foundation, said: “Tim was always vibrant, inspiring and generous. He faced his personal battle with cancer with the exact same courage and strength that he carried with him throughout his life. I am inspired by him every day, and I wanted to ensure that his spirit was not forgotten. The Tim Bacon Foundation aims to help charities who have research projects that make a real difference and who offer help and support for anyone that has been affected by cancer .

“Prevent Breast Cancer do incredible work, funding ground-breaking research into the prediction and prevention of the disease. Our donation will be directly funding the research into breast density, one of the biggest predictors for breast cancer. It’s amazing that there is such a substantial gap in research in order to help prevent the disease for future generations.”

Nikki Barraclough, executive director at Prevent Breast Cancer, said: “Tim’s story is so inspiring, and the Tim Bacon Foundation is truly keeping his legacy alive by offering an incredible level of support to charities that help those who have been affected by cancer. We are excited to be partnering with a fellow Manchester-based charity that we can work together with to make a difference. By supporting our ground-breaking research, The Tim Bacon Foundation will be helping us change lives.

“Despite breast density being a key risk factor for developing breast cancer, there’s been little research into why that is – the generous donation from the Tim Bacon Foundation will be funding two key research projects to give a better understanding into breast density.

“We’ll also be hosting some exciting joint events over the next year, so keep an eye out for what we have planned!”

£99,000 CHEQUE DONATED TO KIDSCAN

The Tim Bacon Foundation are extremely proud to hand over a cheque to Kidscan for £99,000.  This is an incredible amount that will be used to match fund three PhD students over three years to research into Children’s Cancer treatments.  A big thank you goes out to all of our supporters who have raised funds by completing personal challenges, attending events and donating £1 on the bill as well as other fundraising initiatives.

Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research is a Salford based charity who funds and manages research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. They fund research to develop new treatments that not only cure children with cancer but also prevent the side effects of current treatments, which include learning difficulties, mobility and infertility issues.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in children with 25% of children that are diagnosed not making it to their 30th birthdays. Many of those who do survive suffer life-long and life-limiting side effects which are caused by their treatments. Kidscan do not receive any statutory funding but fundraise and receive contributions from individuals, general public, grants and businesses.

GREAT SUPPORT FOR #TEAMTIMBACON AT GREAT MANCHESTER RUN

It was a great turn out on Sunday the 19th May and we wish to thank everyone that ran the Great Manchester Run on behalf of the Tim Bacon Foundation. We welcomed teams from Australasia, Grand Pacific, Gusto Knutsford, New World Trading, Barlows Electrical and CGA Insights.  A special shout out also goes to the team of volunteers from The Alchemist.

8.30am saw the start of the Half Marathon and we had one runner smash it in 1hr 41mins!.  Most of our runners ran the 10K which set off at a more civilized time of 1pm.  I have to mention the two people who ran both the Half Marathon and the 10K!

With our charity tent presence in the village next door to our friends The Christie, we shared our space with Maggie’s Manchester, Prevent Breast Cancer and Kidscan.  A great opportunity for the three charities to work together.

After the run our participants were treated to a massage from students from the BSc Sports Injury degree from Salford University. We can not recommend them highly enough what a great job they did in rejuvenating #TeamTimBacon.

The day ended at The Oast House in Spinningfields for a fabulous party to celebrate the naming of the Tim Bacon Foundation stage.  Entertainment was kindly provided by Genre Music and we had donations of fabulous raffle prizes from venues around the city.  The prizes included a signed Manchester United ball from the Manchester United Foundation and a signed Manchester City Shirt.

A massive thank you to everyone who supported both events.

KATIE’S STORY – MAGGIES MANCHESTER

Typically Maggie’s Manchester receives over 100 visits a day from people facing cancer and their loved ones. The £68,000 donated by the foundation has kept the centre open for over 34 days.

These are people like, Katie, aged 31, who has incurable cancer and has been a regular visitor to Maggie’s for over a year. Katie explained how Maggie’s has helped her:
“When I first walked into Maggie’s I immediately felt it was a safe space where I could talk about things that really scared me and where there was no need to put on a brave face. I felt I had bottled up all my feelings over time so as soon as someone said “are you ok?” I immediately burst into tears. It was great that they just listened to everything I said and it made me feel acknowledged, I felt at home straight away. When in the Centre I’m happiest just sitting around the kitchen table talking to other Centre Visitors. As my cancer is incurable and could come back at any time, the ‘Where Now?’ course has really helped me to adjust to my new life and the uncertainties ahead. There is a great community here and when you spend time here together it’s not just about receiving support but giving it too. Maggie’s makes me feel grounded, I don’t feel a victim here just another person.”

THE CHRISTIE PROTON BEAM THERAPY HAS WELCOMED IT’S FIRST PATIENTS

Patients are now being treated in the Christie for ground breaking treatment

Fifteen-year-old Mason Kettley, who has a rare brain cancer, is about to become one of the first NHS UK patients to have proton-beam therapy, at a new dedicated treatment centre.

He is starting treatment at the £125m centre at Manchester’s Christie hospital. Previously, most patients needing the treatment had to travel abroad. This specialist radiotherapy treatment targets cancers without damaging tissues surrounding the tumours. This is good treatment for children who are at risk of lasting damage to organs that are still growing. This treatment was previously only a handful of countries around the world.

After many years of preparing The Christie’s new proton beam therapy centre has begun treating patients, one of the first is Mason, from West Sussex. Patients who are eligible for treatment will be referred to The Christie from across the UK until University College London Hospital (UCL) opens next year. The new PBT centre will improve the lives of so many patients and their families and relieve the stress of having to uproot to another country for weeks or months at a time to receive proton treatment. You can read more about Mason’s story here.

The Tim Bacon Foundation are delighted to have supported the proton beam research room in our inaugural year by raising £500,000 toward the build and equipment in a dedicated research room within The Proton Beam Therapy centre. In total The Christie charity raised £5.6 million. Ongoing research into proton beam therapy will continue with the aim of improving outcomes and side effects of proton treatment.
